From a historic perspective, boat graphics and painting were not particularly high on most production builder's lists, due most likely to the added labor and materials costs required to build product with more than one or two colors, or some basic viny striping.

The trend to customize and therefore personalize took hold, for the most part, on the west coast initially, and then slowly spread to the east.

Over the last 7 - 10 years, the customization of performance boats has almost become an art form. Now this isn't to say a basic, white hull with a dash of pinstriping isn't equally acceptable. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And any well maintained performance boat gets a nod in my book...
